RESEARCH CENTRE ON PROSTATE DISEASES The Center’s goal is the prevention of prostate diseases and the promotion of holistic therapeutic models. The Center studies prevention, prompt diagnosis and therapeutic strategies that deal with· Prostate hyperplasia· Prostate cancer· Inflammations of the prostate gland While men’s age increases, three dysfunctions are more probable to appear and affect the prostate gland. Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) affects half the men above the age of 50. About 1 out of 11 men will later develop cancer of the prostate. Prostate inflammations (e.g.prostatitis) are also common starting from men’s reproductive period and influence the quality of patients’ life. Regardless of the high frequency that these diseases appear, only 1 out of 7 men knows where the prostate gland is found, and even less men know both the symptoms and the need for prevention control. Some kind of prostate disease is present in almost half the men above the age of 50.
Lack of knowledge on prostate diseases has a lot of consequences:
- men with BPH tend to deny their symptoms and seek for medical help in delay, when their therapeutic choices are dramatically less and therefore the danger for important consequences on their health increases.
- although the fact that prostate cancer can be both diagnosed early and treated in initial stages, patients seek for medical help in a rather late stage, when the disease has been expanded to other parts of the body and therefore the therapeutic choices are limited. There is still lot that need to be done regarding the information of the public on prostate diseases as well as men’s health in general. Also, despite the fact that important scientific advance has been achieved, additional research on prevention, diagnosis and therapy of these diseases is necessary. We confront prostate diseases through research and information. The RESEARCH CENTRE ON PROSTATE DISEASES focuses on men’s education, women’s/ partners’ education on the symptoms of prostate’s diseases, as well as the important advantages of prompt medical advice and therapy, in Greece.
