RESEARCH CENTRE ON CONTINENCE AND PELVIC FLOOR DISEASES (ΚΕΠΠΕ) The Centers goal is to promote continence and pelvic floor health to the general public and those who suffer. The main scope of the Center is to focus on the three types of urinary incontinence:·          Stress incontinence·          Urge incontinence·          Mixed type incontinenceAlthough urinary incontinence is a very common problem especially among women, its successful treatment is also common in most of the cases. Knowledge and therapeutic methods have evolved impressively and can offer nowadays effective prevention as well as permanent treatment. It is estimated that nearly 200 million people suffer worldwide from urinary incontinence. Women have twice as many possibilities to present urinary incontinence than men and these possibilities increase by age. Although older women have more cyst control problems compared to younger ones, lack of cyst control is not a natural consequence of aging and does not concern only the older women. Today it is estimated that nearly 10-15% of women aged 40-65 and 35% over 65 face this problem.Changes in the anatomy of the urinary system, the pelvic floor muscles or the nerves which control them are the usual causes of urinary incontinence. Pregnancy and child’s birth, hormone changes that follow menopause, obesity, neurological diseases or traumas like e.g. multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries, are also some of the factors which may contribute to these changes. Urinary incontinence is followed by decrease in self-esteem, social and sexual activity as well as feelings of shame. Very often, it can cause depression and has an important impact on the quality of life.Unfortunately, more than half of the patients do not seek medical help, although, more than 70% cases can be treated. The RESEARCH CENTRE ON CONTINENCE AND PELVIC FLOOR DISEASES records the dimension of the problems of urinary incontinence and pelvic floor diseases and focuses on the encouragement of patients to seek scientific solutions adjusted to their personal needs.
