The Center for Sexual and Reproductive Health (CSRH) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th) was found in November 1998, following a relevant proposal and the consequent affirmative decision of the A.U.Th. The main aim of the Centre is to promote sexual and reproductive health. This is achieved through three types of activities: a) the development of public awareness programs, b) the development of educational programs on areas of human sexuality, aimed at scientists and various social groups, c) the advancement of basic and clinical research on areas of sexual function and dysfunction.
a) Activities to increase public awareness. The center has set up a communication office that disseminates information about sexual issues and problems. Public awareness and patient education events are regularly organized by the Scientific Committee of the Center. Furthermore, mass media activities, such as interviews on television and radio, and articles on national newspapers are almost monthly. A major annual press conference is held every year (February 14th) in order to present the activities of the Center to the public. In a continuous attempt to inform citizens responsibly, the Center also organizes seminars for journalists regarding topics on human sexuality. It is therefore evident that the center has important experience and organisational abilities to cooperate with the media for the dissemination of information concerning the proposed project.
b) Educational activities concerning sexual function and dysfunction are often organized for pre- and postgraduate students, medical and nursing staff. In order to address the knowledge gap of physicians, the center has developed and implemented 14 basic and advanced educational courses for the management of sexual dysfunctions. These courses have been implemented at national level, at different regions of Greece each time and they have provided training to 740 physicians (GPs, internist specialists in diabetes, cardiologists, urologists, psychiatrists and psychologists). These courses have provided the center with important experience in the implementation of training events and have also raised awareness for the need of such initiatives.
c) Research activities on sexual health are an important activity of the Center. Basic and clinical research is implemented with the cooperation of clinics and labs affiliated to the University, as well as to other academic institutions, in Greece and abroad.
The Center has developed resources and activities that are specialized on sexual dysfunctions and that will be used for the proposed project. These include:
A continuously updated database listing existing scientific information, which is relevant to sexual dysfunctions
A library consisting of scientific publications, which are relevant with the area of our interest,
A film archive consisting of videos that apply to doctors, as well as patients,
Informative material aiming at doctors, as well as patients,
A helpline aiming at the public and doctors,
A website, which offers information on the activities and the objectives of the Center.
An educational electronic game for healthcare providers.
The Center for Sexual and Reproductive Health is part of the European Alliance for Sexual Dysfunction (ESDA), which is a joined European effort to raise awareness and support for people with sexual problems. The fact that ESDA consists of 13 centers located in 13 different countries is of great importance for the dissemination of information concerning the series of events. The Scientific Committee of the CSRH consists of scientists of different disciplines.
